Galway Bay Seafoods gets GOLD!

A number of Galway Bay Seafoods ready to eat seafood will proudly be displaying a coveted Great Taste 2012 logo after being judged by a panel of the UK’s most discerning food experts over 45 days.

Local family run Galway Bay Seafoods launched a new range of value added products two years ago and this year decided to put them to the test by entering them into this prestigious award. Galway Bay Seafoods barbequed salmon, barbequed and peppered smoked mackerel were all awarded one gold star in the awards while the Galway Bay Seafoods smoked mackerel which was awarded a higher accolade of two gold stars.

To achieve Gold in Great Taste is a significant achievement for any food producer and results are eagerly awaited. The scheme, run by the Guild of Fine Food, has been described as the epicurean equivalent of the Booker Prize and in 2012 a total of 8,807 different food and drink products were entered.

When speaking on the announcement of the awards, Galway native Noel Holland of Galway Bay Seafoods was clearly ecstatic to see the Galway Bay Seafoods products recognised by so many experts as one of the best in class, ‘Our award winning products are produced on site here in Galway Bay Seafoods and it is a fantastic achievement for the company and our staff whose hard work has been recognised in such a prestigious award category. Our long experience in the seafood industry was key to the development of the new recipes. It is heartening to see all our work paying off and boosts the moral of everyone involved here. This boost will motivate us to keep striving to continually improve our business.’

Of the 8,807 entered the Great Taste Awards this year and out of this only 123 gained a coveted 3 – star gold, 631 gained a 2-star gold and 2039 gained 1-star gold. Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 buyers from leading food halls including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.
